CrossFit AEQUITAS ("Justice") is the non-profit law enforcement affiliate of the San Diego County District Attorney's Office. Formerly "Team DA CrossFit" (aka "Vista Honey Badgers,") the makings of our affiliate began long ago in North County Vista, when the Honorable Judge Daniel Goldstein took it upon himself to school new deputy district attorneys on the finer points of trial advocacy.....and forging elite fitness.
In 2010, "Team DA CrossFit" was founded by a small handful of DDAs with a passion for fitness, and eager to accept the challenge imposed by Judge Goldstein.
Our humble beginnings started with WODs in the Vista San Diego Sheriff's basement gym (aka "the Dungeon"), thanks to the generosity of the Vista deputies. We read every CrossFit Journal article we could find, studied CrossFit Journal videos, and learned to push the limits of our fitness through CrossFit. Although the gym was not quite "CrossFit friendly," we improvised and managed with what we had. As word spread of our exploits, other DDAs, SD Probation officers, SD Sheriff's deputies, and other SD law enforcement converged together each day to suffer through a WOD.
After only a few months our "handful" had doubled in size. We pooled our resources and slowly accumulated a collection of Olympic bars and bumper plates. Mark Ritchie provided the Stud-Bar Pull-up systems, and orchestrated the construction of an outdoor pull-up rig in the parking lot behind the Vista courthouse. Basketballs filled with pea gravel served as wall balls, stacks of grappling mats became our plyo-boxes, and PVC pipe turned into training bars and parallettes.
"Team DA CrossFit" continued to grow with new branches forming, and DDAs training together at each of the SDDA offices located throughout the county. Recognizing the need for an affiliate, in July 2012, "Team DA CrossFit" was reborn, and CrossFit AEQUITAS was officially welcomed into the CrossFit community.
Today, CrossFit AEQUITAS continues to grow, encouraging anyone wishing to improve their health and wellness to join our team, and train with us in forging elite justice (and fitness!)
CROSSFIT AEQUITAS FEATURED ON SD COUNTY NEWS "INSITE"
"Making the Case For Getting Fit!"
Some had run in marathons, while others had barely if ever exercised.
Now this wildly diverse group of County employees, many of them from the District Attorney’s office, works out together during their lunch hours at the County Complex in Vista. Some work for the Sheriff’s and Probation Departments.
What brought them together? An interest in getting fit. Their vehicle to do that is CrossFit, an exercise program that builds both strength and endurance through ever-changing routines. Workouts can vary from running and weight lifting to striking sledgehammers against tires, as the group did on a recent day. The point is to mix it up, working a variety of muscles and keeping the exercise interesting. Routine is the enemy, said one of the group’s founders, Keith Watanabe, a Deputy District Attorney in the Vista office.
“You make yourself do things you wouldn’t otherwise do,” said Hung Bach, also a Deputy District Attorney in the Vista office and a member of the group. “It builds confidence. It makes you think and wonder what else can I do? It’s addicting.”
Now an affiliate of the CrossFit company, the group officially goes by the name, “CrossFit Aequitas.” Aequitas means justice in Latin.... Read the whole story here!
